Preconception

Planning a pregnancy? Begin with a health conversation

Preconception care is not about creating a perfect checklist. It is a chance to understand your health before pregnancy and make a plan that fits your medical history and circumstances.

Review your health history

A preconception consultation can include long-term health conditions, previous pregnancies, operations, mental health, vaccinations, and family history. The details that matter differ from person to person.

Bring every medicine into the conversation

Include prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, and traditional remedies. Some may need review before pregnancy, but do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance from the clinician who manages it.

Discuss practical preparation

  • Nutrition and whether a folic acid supplement is appropriate for you
  • Smoking, alcohol, sleep, movement, and occupational exposures
  • Dental care and routine health checks that may be due
  • Any concerns about fertility, cycle regularity, or previous pregnancy outcomes

Make the plan personal

Online checklists are broad by design. Your clinician can help distinguish general advice from steps that are relevant to your age, medicines, health conditions, and pregnancy history.
